R'lyeh: Story Dedication

With R'LYEH finally completed I wanted to write a personal post about how this came to be. This story of eldritch horror and madness is dedicated to my sister STEVIE, as kids we were explored many horror based films even if we hadn't reached the correct film rating just yet. I think I was about 9 or 10 when mum introduced me to the movies like Predator and Aliens, sex was no no but spines being ripped out of a man's back was totally fine, our dad introduced us to things more of the spooky nature like The Haunting, Whistle and I'll Come to You, The Woman in Black. Over decades my sister and I have wandered through the dark corridors of horror including sneaking me in to see Blade II when I was not 18 but my big sister managed to sneak me in with a denim jacket if I recall to make me look older, we've been expanding our library of our favourite movie that have creeped us out ranging from John Carpenter's The Fog all the way to James Wan's The Conjuring.

It would be in my twenties when we would discover the mad world of horrors created by H.P. Lovecraft when we got a book of a couple of his stories my favourite being The Call of Cthulhu and her's At the Mountains of Madness, this new love of Lovecraft horror has always stuck with me and after watching several films and video games that are based of this style of horror I’ve always wanted to do a Lovecraft story but I put it on the shelf for the time being. R’lyeh came into being when I got the idea for doing a Lovecraft horror but set in space, the main inspiration came from the video game series Dead Space after many ideas running through my head eventually the plot for R'lyeh was born.

I know that dedications are normally at the beginning of a story but I'm mixing it up, so to the best companion to go into the into the darkness and face the ghosts and monsters of cinema because let's face it my husband is too much of a wuss, this story is dedicated to you.
Cheers Nerf Herder

Dust off the cobwebs

Hey Firelight Wanderers   Just a bit of an update haven’t been in the mood to write at the moment with work, increase in rent and bills, and all the shit that’s a been happening in the world my mental health took a right kick in the nuts a few weeks ago. However I’ve taken some time to refresh myself avoid the doom scrolling on Twitter and finally dusted of the keyboard of my laptop and ready to get back to it.

My Apologies

To all my weary travellers and firelight wanderers. I haven't been as active on my blog with my writing for a while and that is because several months ago my husband was diagnosed with a tumour in his brain, it's a benign one so he's ok but he is currently going through radiotherapy to help with its growth and to hopefully reduce the tumour's size. I am still and always will be 100% committed to The Ember Lights but I'm also 100% committed to my husband and his care and support comes first, over time I am doing story writing but in smaller increments. I look forward to you coming to the campfire and I promise more tales are coming. Much love to you all Martyn Sudlow-McKay P.S. I will be giving a taster for another Handbridge Horror No 3 titled THE GRINNING MAN

REIGN (Preview)

PROLOGUE: Blood & Curses EGYPT, 4 th CENTURY The great city of Ahkhann was once the glimmering jewel of Egypt a capital of culture, literature and trading goods and was the home of the Pharaoh Re’hotpe, a great man loved by the people of his empire which he ruled for many years. The city twinkled with fire lights and the royal palace was bathed in ethereal moonlight as Re’hotpe was stood on the balcony of his chambers looking out of over Ahkhann, he gazed in wonder and amazement at the colossal pyramid that was being constructed, even incomplete it looked beautiful with the torches fires and the moon gave the pyramid a hazy like glow a monument worthy of a Pharaoh, he left his chambers walking slowly down the hallway lost in his thoughts as passing servants bowed to him, as Re’hotpe continued on his walk his stone mason appeared and approached him, the stone mason bowed when he stopped in front of the Pharaoh “My Lord” Re’hotpe smiled at the man “Ah just the ...
